MANICURE AND PEDICURE 101

Treat your hands and feet to this beauty regime once a week for optimum softness and shine. Time commitment: 30 minutes

  • remove
  • Remove old polish. Let a semi-soaked cotton ball sit on the nail a second to loosen it. Don't wiggle! Wipe in clean strokes to keep polish out of cuticles.
  • file
  • File nails. Clip if you need to. Use an emery board to file from the edge to the center; then, from the other edge back to the center. Don't saw back and forth-this weakens the nails!
  • soak
  • Soak hands and feet in warm, soapy water. This loosens dirt and softens cuticles. Then clean with brush. Dry.
  • push back
  • Push back cuticles. Use an orange stick tip wrapped in cotton. Never cut cuticles-it invites infection. Clip hangnails with a small clipper.
  • moisturize
  • Lather on hand cream and rub in for a relaxing five minutes. Pat dry with a damp, warm towel. Repeat step one to rid nails of oils.
  • polish
  • Apply one stroke of polish at the middle, then one sweep down each side. (Do your thumbnails last so you can use them to clean up messy corners.)
  • wait
  • Polish hardens in about 90 seconds, but remains vulnerable to dents and scratches for a full 15 minutes. For a super-quick dry, plunge nails into a bowl of ice cold water after one and half minutes.

  • Brush or spray a quick-drying oil formula on your nails to speed the drying process and prevent dings.
